When I saw the trailer for Disney's next princess movie Wish I was instantly wondering what they were trying to do in terms of "experimental" animation, and found this article (https://www.polygon.com/23699682/wish-disney-trailer-animated-movie-release-date) that gave a bit of a peek into it. Basically, this movie seems to be a generally interesting Disney princess tale, save for the animation isn't strictly 3D, but also has painterly elements overtop of it as well.
This was really exciting to me because in the landscape of animation, Disney deciding to forgo traditional 2D animation has always been a sad thing to think about, and the cooperation very much has a cookie-cutter standard for the way their animation looks (it's getting better, but Frozen was just one example of how there was only "one" style of animating that they wanted to maintain). So to see Disney take a foray into 3D animation that isn't what they usually make is really exciting, and it's been wonderful to see the sort of animated-style renaissance that films like Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse have jumpstarted! I'm excited to see where this goes, because I know I'm probably also not the only person who would love to see 2D animation come back into popularity, and especially traditionally drawn 2D animation.
